Nu-disco, traditionally the realm of the beard stroking brigade, has morphed lately into this week’s newest genre, aptly named ‘slo-mo house’, as the deep house brigade put their own spin on it. I for one am all for a bit of 115bpm action if the results are exciting new artists like Nick Turner coming through. The press release says this is Nick’s debut release and, by heck, if this is where he’s starting from then I can’t wait to hear what he’s up to in a couple of years. Sure, it has the obligatory disco samples but they’re worked in so well with fresh percussion and an infectiousness that starts at the bassline and works its way right up to the hi-hats. Two tracks ‘Love Is Reel’ and ‘Out Of Your Love’ are both equally excellent with the sequencing and depth of layers captivating throughout. Right, I’m off to the barbers – short on the top, keep it long at the back please sir!
